Mark Opitz (producer - Cold Chisel, INXS, Jimmy Barnes) was sent a demo of 'Sex And Fame' from this band from Sydney's outer west. He was interested and sent them away to write some more songs, which they did, and the result was a recording contract. Despite that six months' songwriting it was 'Sex And Fame' which stood out.

Yes !

Yes! You may notice I've started blogging again. Not quite full steam ahead but I'll trying posting today and every other day, don't hold me to it. Where possible, I'll try including with the postings a YouTube video, a "standout" track to give you a taste of the style of music etc. If no videos are available, future postings may include a streaming track or downloadable single track/song. Of course, leave a comment here or on any of the postings to give me an idea on what you think of the album I have selected for posting ........

"Homosapien" [sound clip]

During the wave of Brisbane based rock artists to hit the Australian Top 40 during the mid-late 1990's, this band virtually missed the boat. Led by brothers Nathan and Luke Thomas and featuring Savage Garden drummer Glen Gibson, this album drew from the spectrum of British 80's dark electronic pop mixed with heavy alternative rock. The singles "Trashed", "Homosapien", "Good For Me" and "She Said" were favourites with radio but failed to impact the charts. "Homosapien" was used in the film "The Craic" with comedian Jimeoin as an Irish immigrant, whilst "She Said" has been used as the credits for video show "Rage". The band were dropped by Festival Records almost a year after they signed and split in 2002 after releasing the critically acclaimed "Accelerator" EP on MGM. (info courtesy Dario Western/Discogs)

"Solid Rock"

Formed by singer-songwriter Shane Howard in the late 1970s, they produced three full albums, and a very rare four song EP record. The original name of the band was "The Goanna Band", which was the name used on the EP release in 1979. However, the original name was soon shortened to simply "Goanna" by the time that the album Spirit of Place was released in the early 1980s. They were signed to WEA Australia.

Goanna's début album Spirit of Place won the ARIA Best Album of the Year for 1982, with their first major hit, "Solid Rock", winning Best Single of the Year. This song touched on the displacement of aboriginal tribes by the encroaching European settlers. It became a worldwide hit, and was the first rock record to feature extensive use of an Australian didgeridoo, one of the world's oldest wood instruments. (info courtesy wikipedia)

"Razor's Edge" and "On The Platform" released previously on that rare EP titled The Goanna Band.

Whisper

Lamplight
Sound of Trees
White Flag
Long Way Away

"Whisper"

Schnell Fenster was a Melbourne-based band, formed in 1986 by members of Split Enz after the break up of that band. "The Sound of Trees" album was released in 1988. The band played in Australia and also toured New Zealand in 1989 as support act for Crowded House. Renewed interest in Split Enz led to an American album release later that year, but with no tour and little record company support, the album did not chart well. (info courtesy wikipedia)

You may recognise Phil Judd. He also fronted the band The Swingers. "Whisper","Love-Hate Relationship" and "This Illusion" are singles from this album.
